Medieval India saw a dynamic and far-reaching efflorescence of popular devotion to Lord Krishna, sometimes called “the bhakti renaissance.” This movement was largely propagated by Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu (1486-1534 AD), whom the faithful accept as Lord Krishna Himself, manifested in the form of a devotee who taught the chanting of His own names. Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu directly inspired in His followers a tremendous outpouring of works in Sanskrit on philosophy and theology, as well as devotional songs, poetry, drama, and hagiography.
